This is an English language class. It is a laboratory-based course where students will design and build an autonomous mobile robot to compete in a final student project that pits each robot against one another in head to head matches.
The class requires assimilation of a wide variety of technical skills that students have acquired during their undergraduate studies.Students are expected to assimilate information they have learned about electronics, transducers, microcontrollers, control systems and other topics to develop a complete project that requires knowledge of all these elements. A Basic Stamp or other microcontroller will be the heart of the control system. Students will construct the robots from LEGO parts, design sensor systems and develop control strategies for the contest. Several laboratory experiments will be performed in class to support the building of the robots for the contest. Topics covered include microcontroller (Basic Stamp) operation and programming, dc motors and motor control, odometry, expert system control, fuzzy logic control, infrared communication, and ultrasound, infrared and tactile sensing.
THIS IS A LABORATORY-INTENSIVE CLASS THAT REQUIRES A SIGNIFICANT TIME COMMITMENT.
